Information :: Choosing a System

Why choose a PC Based DVR (Digital Video Recorder) instead of a VCR or Standalone DVR unit? The most important thing that is needed in surveillance is reliability...

This ELIMINATES the VCR system, because to be reliable we must eliminate the Human Factor.

Ask anyone who has had a VCR Based system... after a while, you forget to change the tape at the specific time, or forget to push record... not to mention the downfalls of storage on tape, and the HOURS it takes to review them!

So that leaves us with either a stand Alone DVR unit that you can find cheap at many electronics retailers OR...

"Our professional grade PC-Based DVR Card Kits and Complete Systems
provide reliable functionality --- At a fraction of the Cost!"

or even other tasks while still recording.
  •
  • Provides Smart-Searching Capabilities for faster
reviewing and retrieval of pre-recorded videos
  •

Since PC based DVR's do record video directly to the hard drive on the PC, one of the most over looked upgrades when purchasing a PC based DVR surveillance system is the size of the hard drive.

Several yet-to-be factors influence the amount of information stored such as:

    • Resolution to be recorded
    • Moiton detection settings
    • Frames-per-second (FPS) being recorded
    • Number of cameras recording simultaneously
    • Level of activity being recorded
Use this calculator to determine just how much storage you will need based on how many days storage you want.

    See Station Hard Drive Calculator

How many days of video do you want to store?
    Number of cameras recording?
Number of frames per second you would like each camera to record?
How many hours per day does the facility operate?
How many days of the week does the facility operate?
You will need about of hard drive space.

    Tips:

One (1) frame per second is the lowest frame rate recordable and 30 frames per second is the maximum record frame rate which is real time.

There is no real need to record in real time unless there are regulatory reasons such as in case of government facilities or casinos.

Recording at 1 frame per second is what traditional analog systems record.

You can always rewind in high speed so the lower the frame rate the faster it is to playback an entire day.

At 3 - 5 frames per second recording you will not miss any activity (remember this is per second).

Note: these are just estimates as a variety of conditions can substantially change the storage requirements.
